Des Moines Police Department
Chief of Police,
Judy Bradshaw
The Des Moines Police Department employs a total of 489 people. 379 are sworn police officers and 110 are civilian employees.
In the battle against crime we’d like to think that our force is actually strengthened as we rely on the eyes and ears of the 200,000 citizens within our community.
It should come as no surprise that there simply are not enough police officers to control the amount of crime occurring today. The Des Moines Police Department has enlisted the help of the citizens of Des Moines to jointly address the needs and concerns of the various neighborhoods throughout the City.
Community Policing programs have proven to be effective in empowering neighborhoods otherwise infected with high levels of crime. Citizens and police officers together find solutions to crime problems and conditions that affect the neighborhood.
The Des Moines Police Department is organized into five bureaus; the Administrative Services Bureau, the Detective Bureau, the Homeland Security Bureau, the Inspectional Services Bureau and the Patrol Services Bureau. Each Bureau is under the command of a Major, all of whom report directly to the Chief of Police.
Additionally, there are several support sections organized under the title of Police Administration which are under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police. The Public Information Officer, and the Police Department Legal Advisor are included.
