YEAR 2003 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
INVOLVING MAJOR STREETS

The following is a list of planned projects for the year 2003 construction season which involve closing or restricting traffic along major streets. Advance notification of each project will also be done individually, closer to the beginning of project construction:

M.L. King Jr. Parkway Project:

1.  ML King – 7th to 16th Streets

The paving portion of this project is completed. Construction continues on sidewalk and landscape work. The street will remain open to traffic during this phase of the work.

2.  ML King – Ingersoll to Center

The paving portion of this project is completed. Construction continues on sidewalk and landscape work. The street will remain open to traffic during this phase of the work.

3.  Ingersoll Avenue to Raccoon River (Including Grand Avenue Bridge)

Work continues on retaining wall construction and grading. The new Grand Avenue bridge was OPENED to traffic on November 3rd.

4.  Fleur Drive near Waterworks Park

Work will begin in early 2004 on the portion of M.L. King along Fleur Drive near Waterworks Park, including two   new bridges over the Raccoon River, to connect the north-south and east-west segments of M. L. King. Fleur Drive is expected to be reduced to one lane in each direction during this construction, which is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2004.

5.  SW 9th Street and Porter

    This intersection safety improvement is underway this summer, including widening of SW 9th to provide left-turn lanes and new traffic signals. Traffic on SW 9th is reduced to one-lane in each direction, and the west leg of Porter is closed. The work will not be completed until Spring 2004.

6.  SW 9th Street at Raccoon River

    A bridge rehabilitation project is underway that requires that traffic be reduced to one-lane in each direction. This work should be completed late in 2003.

7.  6th and Euclid

    This project involves an intersection "streetscape" improvement. 6th Avenue will be closed both north and south of Euclid during portions of construction, which is expected to begin in the Spring of 2004. Euclid Avenue will be reduced to one-lane in each direction.

8.  3rd Street Realignment – Iowa Events Center

    As part of the Events Center construction, 3rd Street will remain closed through 2003 to allow construction of both the new arena and exhibition hall. The street is expected to be paved and re-open in the spring of 2004.

9.  Easton Blvd. near E. 26th Street - Storm Sewer improvements

    This involves the construction of a storm water detention basin south of Easton Boulevard at E. 26th Street. As part of the detention basin construction, work on Easton Boulevard between E. 26th Street and E. 27th Street has been completed and the street reopened to traffic on October 14.

10.  Saylor Road – Washington to Guthrie - - Upper Union Park Storm Sewer

    Major street work has been completed.

11.  E. 9th Street – Arthur to Hull - - Upper Union Park Storm Sewer

    E. 9th Street will be closed starting in May 2004 as a part of the Upper Union Park Storm Sewer project.  Other local streets in the area may also be closed during construction which will not be completed until 2005.

12.  Park St. – 2nd Ave to 7th St. - - Birds Run Storm Sewer

    Construction of the Birds Run Outfall Sewer project will begin this spring and continue until Spring, 2004. Installation of this large sewer will require closing of Park Street in stages between 7th Street and 2nd Avenue.

13.  15th Street – MLK to Ingersoll

Construction is nearing completion between M.L. King and Walnut Street and the new street in open to traffic. A second project, from Walnut Street to Ingersoll Avenue, is nearly complete. As part of this project, 15th Street has been connected between Grand and Ingersoll Avenue's.

Street Resurfacing Projects:

14.  Fleur Drive – McKinley Ave to Army Post Rd

Completed.

15.  SE 5th Street – Park Ave to McKinley Ave

Completed.

16.  Locust St. – 6th Ave to 17th St

Delayed until 2004.This resurfacing project will affect traffic for approximately 1 week this summer.

17.  E. Locust St. – 2nd Ave to Penn Ave

Completed.

Iowa DOT projects affecting City Streets:

18.  Polk Boulevard bridges over I-235

    Both bridges are being replaced. One bridge will be closed at a time. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the open bridge.

19.  MLK/19th Streets at I-235

    Work will continue on this I-235 interchange this year, including construction of a new roadway and bridge on 19th Street. M.L. King and 19th Street traffic will be maintained during reconstruction of this interchange. The work is expected to be complete in Spring, 2004.

20.  2nd/3rd Streets at I-235

    Work on this I-235 interchange continues. The new 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street bridges are open to traffic. The westbound and eastbound I-235 entrance ramps are scheduled to open in late 2003.

21.  Penn Avenue bridge over I-235

    Work continues on this I-235 interchange this year, including construction of a new roadway on E. 6th Street and a new bridge on Penn Avenue. Southbound traffic on E. 6th Street will be maintained during construction while Penn Avenue will be closed over I-235. The pedestrian bridge west of E. 6th Street will also be reconstructed. All of this interchange work is scheduled to be complete in 2003.

22.  East 12th Street over I-235

    This work includes removal and replacement of the E.12th Street bridge as part of the I-235 reconstruction. E. 12th Street is closed, with traffic detoured to either E. 9th Street or E. 14th / E.15th Street.

23.  Euclid Avenue at I-235

    A new bridge is being built over I-235 and the ramps will be modified.

24.  63rd St. – University to Hickman - - Resurfacing

    Completed.

25.  Merle Hay Rd. & Hickman Rd. - 63rd to Madison - - Resurfacing

Completed.
